Are Ladybugs Poisonous To Cats?

So you found out you have a bug-eating feline friend and are wondering if ladybugs are poisonous to cats?

Lucky for you, ladybugs, for the most part, are completely harmless if consumed by your cat. While there are some other colorful bugs who have toxins such as fireflies, spiders, and lovebugs, thankfully the Ladybug does not.

Now that does not mean that your cat will enjoy ladybugs because the defense mechanism of the ladybug besides its colorful appearance is its taste. They tend to have a very bitter and nauseating taste which will probably discourage your cat to try one again.

The only danger that could come from your cat eating too many ladybugs may be irritation in the GI tract, or ulcers according to local Veterinarian.

Should I Spray My Yard For Ladybugs To Protect My Cat?

Because the ladybugs are not dangerous to your cat I would hold off on introducing any sort of chemicals to your yard. Especially any areas where your cat likes to hang out.

These chemicals can be much more harmful to your cat than any ladybug could, or even most other insects for that matter.

Unless you have a severe pest problem such as spiders or other invasive insects I would let nature take care of itself. Plus insect hunting is a fun pass time for your cat.

Ladybug Facts and Info

A ladybug or Coccinellidae is a type of small beetle that is found all over the world and comes in many shapes and colors.

The most common one in the US and UK people think of is the Red and Black Spot Ladybug, or commonly known as the “Seven Spotted Ladybug”.

These are harmless bugs who contrary to popular belief aren’t an agricultural pest. They actually are very useful in eating many of the pests that destroy crops every year.

Appearance

An adult ladybug may reach a body length of 7.6–10.0 mm (0.3–0.4 in) and come in a variety of colors but is most commonly seen as red with black spots. They usually have six legs and will fly using their wings tucked under their dome-like body.

Summary

To wrap things up, no, Ladybugs are not poisonous to cats, and although your cat may eat one or two out of curiosity, you can rest easy knowing they should be fine. Ladybugs have a yucky taste as a defense mechanism, which will put your cat off ever wanting to eat them.

So the next time you see a ladybug in your yard, just know it’s out there working hard protecting your grass and plants.
